Myths about Hypnosis

Updated: Oct 30, 2024

There are many misconceptions about hypnosis.  You may feel apprehensive or nervous, this can inhibit the success of the treatment.  Your hypnotherapist will explain what will happen during the session and answer any questions.

Common misconceptions and myths:

  • Hypnosis is sleep – whilst you are in hypnosis you are not asleep; you are awake and aware of what is happening, and you can interact with the therapist when needed.

  • I won't be in control – you are in control at all times, if you hear a suggestion that you don’t agree with or don’t understand your subconscious mind will automatically reject it.  If the therapist is using specific techniques to help your progress, this will be discussed prior to the session and only performed with your consent.

  • I will be put into trance – hypnosis is often portrayed as putting someone into deep trance so that they will perform silly act like clucking like a chicken.  The truth is the people who volunteer to act on stage allow themselves to be participants in silly suggestions, no one can control your mind, unless you let them.   All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, the therapist does not put you into a trance, they guide you into a trance-like state and you are in control of how deep you go into trance.

  • I can’t be hypnotised – we all naturally enter a state of trance.  We do it at least twice a day, whilst watching tv, reading a book, watching a movie, driving and before waking and falling asleep.

  • I won’t wake up – hypnosis is very safe, and the hypnotherapist will ensure you return to full awareness, feeling alert and relaxed.  During self-hypnosis you will naturally come out of trance.
